Exam Versions

The CompTIA A+ certification currently encompasses two exams: 220-1101 (Core 1) and 220-1102 (Core 2). Launched in April 2022, this is the active version of the A+ exam series and is scheduled to retire in Spring 2025.

The A+ Certification Test

Achieving the CompTIA A+ certification requires passing two separate exams. Each exam incurs its own fee, and there is no mandatory sequence for taking them; however, both must be completed before the exam version retires. It's essential that both exams align with the same set of objectives. Once obtained, the CompTIA A+ certification remains valid for three years from the date the exams are passed. Both the 220-1101 and 220-1102 exams are computer-based tests comprising 90 questions each, with a total time allocation of 90 minutes per exam. Candidates receive their results immediately upon completing the exam and submitting a brief, mandatory survey.

Performance-Based Questions (PBQs)

In addition to traditional multiple-choice and drag-and-drop questions, the current versions of the A+ certification exams incorporate Performance-Based Questions (PBQs). These questions are designed to assess candidates' practical skills by requiring them to perform specific tasks or solve problems within a simulated environment. The simulations may involve various aspects of IT infrastructure, including:

  • Command Prompts
  • Windows Operating Systems
  • Networking Environments

PBQs mirror real-world scenarios to evaluate the candidate's ability to apply their knowledge effectively.

Continuing Education (CE) Program

Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Linux+, Cloud+, PenTest+, Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+), and Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+) feature CE (Continuing Education). To maintain validity, these certifications must be renewed within three years from the certification date. Renewal can be achieved by:

  • Retaking the Latest Exam Version: Candidates can pass the most recent release of the relevant exam.
  • Advancing to a Higher-Level Certification: Obtaining a higher-tier CompTIA certification automatically renews the lower-tier certifications.
  • Fulfilling CE Program Requirements: Engaging in approved continuing education activities.

Lifetime Certifications

Candidates who were certified on or before December 31, 2010, retain their certifications for life. However, no new lifetime certifications are being issued beyond this date.

Exam Retake Policies

CompTIA does not provide free retests or discounts for exam retakes. Each attempt requires payment of the standard exam fee. The retake policy is as follows:

  • First to Second Attempt: No mandatory waiting period between the first and second attempts.
  • Third Attempt Onwards: A mandatory waiting period of at least 14 calendar days is required from the date of the previous attempt before retaking the exam.
